Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) means taking HIV medications shortly after possible exposure to HIV to prevent infection with that virus. The PEP has been created with the intention of using it in emergency situations. It is not intended for regular use by people who may be exposed to HIV frequently. PEP should be started within the first 72 hours (the first 3 days) after possible exposure to HIV. The sooner you start taking it the better it will be.
Who should consider receiving PEP?
If you think you have been recently exposed to HIV, contact a health care provider immediately. Although in Ecuador, it is only available in the case of professional exposure to HIV (for health service providers) and in cases of sexual violation. In the case of non-professional exposure (due to sexual intercourse), the Kimirina Corporation has a line of support consisting of counseling, the rapid HIV and STI test, free of charge. The person to access the PEP must consider the payment of the medical consultation and the cost of the medication.
PEP may be prescribed to you if you are HIV negative or do not know your HIV infection status and in the last 72 hours:
- Do you think you have been exposed to HIV during sexual intercourse?
- Did you share needles or drug preparation equipment (means)?
- Did you suffer a sexual assault?
If you are prescribed PEP, you will take HIV medicine daily for 28 days.
